Thanks, Arjun, for setting the stage this way.

The narrow topic of Permian produced water has become something of a media theme, since it lends itself to "worry porn," in the words of one of my subscribers. Of course there are real challenges there but we also see a lot of activity to address it, in particular by some of the energy midstreams. To my mind it will remain an interesting area of activity but there will be no crisis outside the inventions of the main-stream media.

Happy 2006 Arjun and Super-spiked team. Back to the most important sector of the year: AI! (no, I'm just kidding, it's energy, the answer is always energy).

Up in the North here where I can go skiing right after the workday (there are actually several decent ski hills with chair lifts inside the city of Toronto, most people don't know that) we have a great new Prime Minister who combines exceptional technocratic skill from his years in government (i.e. the ability to get government at all levels to coordinate and actually get things done, instead of just debating it/tying it up forever in red tape) and a clear energy vision (i.e. a non-ideological view of energy as an important input to the economy with an effort to make it as clean as possible). Mr. Carney's government immediately established the federal Major Projects Office specifically to coordinate and streamline approvals for several big-ticket long-overdue energy projects:

- four new modular reactors at the Darlington New Nuclear Project,

- refurbishing and upgrading the CANDU reactors at Pickering (this just pre-dated the election)

- Ksi Lisims LNG export terminal (Prince Rupert, BC) was formally designated for fast-tracking

- Ottawa and Alberta reached an MOU paving the way for new oil pipeline development to the British Columbia coast

- several other ideas, including an interesting but long shot port under discussion for LNG exporting via a port Manitoba (yes, you read that right - most people forget Manitoba has ocean access).

It's been a like a month-long Christmas for energy nerds up here. Looking forward to 2026...
