Arjun….Another well reasoned video covering multiple topics. Why don’t we have more of your type of thinking? It’s in short supply. In particular these “this and only this” mandates are so obviously flawed, yet they’re seemingly everywhere. Very frustrating. It seems clear to me that China is going to get energy every which way to Sunday. This will be to their advantage if the United States and others attempt to pigeon hole available sources. I view this as a gigantic risk.

I’m compelled to comment on Tesla. You have high praise as a vehicle owner. I think that’s great. But as you point out, situations vary widely. A few weeks ago I drove 1400 miles in two days from southeast Wisconsin to Jackson Hole. In two weeks I will make the return trip. Given the territory I cover on the route, you might guess I highly prefer my internal combustion engine vehicle. I wondered how an EV would perform at -29 degrees F as I approached Gillette, WY.

Also, I often find myself feeling that the real product of Tesla is……TSLA. I’m sure you know what I mean. And yes, I blame you know who for a big part of this. The ecosystem on both X and YouTube is astoundingly absurd. It indeed has a cult following. Just yesterday, I saw an interview where an actual investment advisor from Cincinnati is proposing (via a simple model) the market cap for bots (with TSLA the obvious winner) will be $450 trillion. The comment section of the video was filled with praise. Pointing out that the MSCI ACWI index (85% of the global investable equity opportunity set) has a market cap of $67 trillion and that global GDP is not much above $100 trillion elicits crickets. My point is this space is filled with ignorant investors and obvious hucksters. It’s a cesspool. Admittedly, I let this bother me more than I should. Caveat emptor.

Thanks again

Thanks so much Douglas. I would say that everyone who is not an extremist on any issue needs to speak up. At least in the USA, we can't complain that both parties amplify that extreme ends when most people toward the middle don't participate in primaries, speak up about issues, etc.

On Tesla, yes definitely not a 100% solution. Zero chance something like Califiornia's 2035 ICE vehicle ban can last. And don't think EVs really make sense for large parts of the middle of the country, at least not outside of cities and not for long distance travel.

Nevermind India, Africa, etc. I think there will be motivation in India, like with China, to electrify as much as possible to limit oil imports, but the staggering # of people mean oil demand growth has no end in sight.

On Tesla itself, I have never gotten as worked up about Elon or the cult following. Tesla sold 1.2 million cars last year with the Model Y especially popular. It's a remarkable achievement and I don't think is explained by its cult following. SpaceX and Starlink are not trivial endeavors either. Elon's personality is what it is...but I'd sign for him over a large number of the corporate CEOs that run so many publicly traded companies.
